Lachrimae or Seaven Teares

Dowland 400th-Anniversary Weekend

with Elizabeth Kenny (lute)

Lachrimae or Seaven Teares
Dowland, admired by contemporaries for his ‘sad and doleful’ harmonies, distilled his profound feeling for heartfelt emotions into his ‘Lachrimae pavan’. He placed the work at the head of his Lachrimae or Seaven Teares, a matchless collection of pieces for five-part instrumental consort comprising seven inspired versions of the ‘Lachrimae pavan’ and 14 other dances, among them ‘Semper Dowland, semper dolens’ (‘Always Dowland, always sorrowful’).

John Dowland Mrs Nichols Almand; Lachrimae Antiquae; Lachrimae Antiquae Novae; Mr Nicholas Gryffith his Galliard; Sir John Souch’s Galliard; Lachrimae Gementes; Lachrimae Tristes; Mr Giles Hoby his Galliard; The King of Denmark, his Galliard; Lachrimae Coactae; Lachrimae Amantis; Mr. Thomas Collier his Galiard; Mr Bucton's Galliard; The Earl of Essex Galliard; Lachrimae Verae; Semper Dowland semper dolens; Captain Piper his Galliard; Mr Henry Noel his Galliard; Sir Henry Umpton's Funerall; Mr George Whitehead his Almand; Mr. John Langton's Pauan
