Complementing the feature with Jorge Losana, director of the vocal ensemble Cantoría, this playlist takes us on a journey through the vibrant and diverse soundscape of Spain’s Early Music traditions. Spanish Baroque music, with its fusion of folk and courtly styles, offers a unique lens on European music of the period, balancing intricate counterpoint with the earthy rhythms of popular dance forms such as the fandango, jácara/xacara, and pasacalle.
Many of these pieces are rooted in the folk traditions of Spain, transformed by the Baroque aesthetic. The interplay between the structured forms of European Baroque music and the spontaneous, lively rhythms of Spanish dance and folk music is particularly striking in this selection. The playlist includes Antonio Soler’s , performed by the Lowe Ensemble, alongside tracks from the album, The Secrets of Andalusia, by Lux Musicae London – both supported by a Continuo grant. Also included are performances by Cantoría and the celebrated Jordi Savall, whose interpretations continue to shape our understanding of Spanish Early Music.
