Vorhalt Ensemble

Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring

Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring
Vorhalt Ensemble presents an afternoon of music by JS Bach, performed on period instruments by a chamber ensemble of singers and instrumentalists specialising in 17th- and 18th-century repertoire.

Marking the beginning of the ensemble’s residency at St James’ Sussex Gardens, the programme brings together two of Bach’s most celebrated works: the Harpsichord Concerto No. 1 in D minor and the cantata Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben (Cantata No. 147), written for the Feast of the Visitation.

Centred around themes of celebration, devotion and joy, the programme moves between virtuosic instrumental writing and expansive choral movements, culminating in the famous chorale Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring.

Performers:
Jessie Edgar
soprano
Ruby Bak alto
Will Anderson tenor
John Johnston bass
Luke Mitchell harpsichord
Sungjoon Park conductor
