Tonus Peregrinus

Behind the Music

Revealing the Original Notation of the Eton Choirbook

Behind the Music
Join Antony Pitts and Tonus Peregrinus for an intimate open rehearsal/workshop, gathered around a unique life-size facsimile of music from the Eton Choirbook, one of the greatest surviving treasures of pre-Reformation polyphony.

Come and get up close to this magnificent manuscript in person, examining its original notation, text underlay, and illuminated capitals. The ensemble will rehearse and demonstrate some key works from the manuscript, discussing historical context, performance practice, notation and expressive choices. It’s a rare chance to explore the expressive freedom, soaring lines, and spiritual depth of these revolutionary pieces as they were originally performed – singers gathered around a single large manuscript on a lectern – and gain fresh revelations that prepare your ear and heart for the evening’s concert.

Early booking is advised.

  • date Thu, 7 May 2026
  • location St Martin-in-the-Fields, London
  • time 5:00pm
  • ticket £15
