The Duke's Consort

Awakening Caesar

Royal Odes by Purcell

Awakening Caesar
Prize-winning young ensemble The Duke's Consort presents a programme centred around two Royal Odes by Henry Purcell. The Triumphant From Hardy Climes and Dangerous Toils of War celebrates the arrival of Prince George of Denmark for a Royal Wedding, celebrating his martial valour and many facets of love, including in the famed song 'The Sparrow and the Gentle Dove'. By contrast, Why Are All the Muses Mute? considers Britain a land without music on the death of Charles II, allegorising it to Roman Britain at the departure of Caesar. These odes are paired with two of Purcell's most remarkable vocal duets.

Programme:
Henry Purcell
(1659-1695) From Hardy Climes and Dangerous Toils of War
Hosanna to the Highest
O Dive Custos
Why are All the Muses Mute

  • date Sat, 6 June 2026
