Sarah Small
Good Again? Nothing Gold Can Stay
Viol, voice, and lute recital
featuring Kim Porter (alto and composer)

Viola da gamba player Sarah Small is on a mission to demonstrate how touring can be done differently.
Disillusioned by the lack of support for sustainable touring within the arts, along with concerns about the impact and cost of audience travel from rural areas to venues in cities, she’s taking matters into her own hands and cycling from venue to venue to share her programme ‘Good Again?’ with audiences far and wide.
Centred around the work ‘Good Againe’ by Tobias Hume, the programmes feature music expressing the feelings of grief, contemplation, and hope felt by many of us during these unstable times, along with tales from the road that remind us of the beauty in slow travel.
For this performance, Sarah has commissioned a new piece for viol and voice, 'Nothing Gold Can Stay’, written by Durham-based composer and alto Kim Porter. They will premiere this in concert, joined by lutenist Augustin Cornwall-Irving to present the following programme:
Have You Seen the Bright Lily Grow? (Johnson)
Music for a While (Purcell)
Time Stands Still (Dowland)
Fairest Isle (Purcell)
Les Voix Humaines (Marais)
Une Jeune Fillette (Anon.)
Lachrimae Pavaen / Flow my Tears (Schop / Dowland)
Good Again?** (Lillie Harris)
Nothing Gold Can Stay* (Kim Porter)
Fantasie en Rondeau / The Oak (Sainte-Colombe / Tennyson)
Good Againe (Hume)
Never Weather-Beaten Sail (Campion)
An Evening Hymn (Purcell)
This concert will last approximately 70 minutes without an interval.
*commissioned with support from the Vaughan Williams Foundation
**commissioned with support from the Francis Routh Trust
