The Art of the Trio Sonata

The Art of the Trio Sonata

This is a programme of two parts, the first exploring the shapeshifting identity of the trio sonata across temporal and geographical boundaries, and the second paying homage to the genius of Bach. From the evocative episodic writing of Isabella Leonarda’s ninth sonata to the strict imitative counterpoint of Handel’s fast movements, this programme pulls together music written for the church, for royalty, and for the theatre. Including dance movements inspired by French suites, operatic arias and the literal canonic writing in Purcell’s “Two in One upon a Ground”, these works showcase the sheer versatility of the genre and its role as a trigger for incredible creativity.

The second half plays with texture and instrumentation, taking inspiration from Bach’s own repurposing of his own materials. Swelling from one player in the solo cello suite and violin partita extracts, to a duet in a new Liturina arrangement of a Well-Tempered Clavier Prelude, hear Liturina in full force for the organ trio sonata and his sparkling true trio sonata, BWV 1039.
