Anguish and violence might not usually be selling points, but they abound in Beethoven’s Grosse Fugue, the almost terrifyingly powerful final movement of his String Quartet No. 13, which became a standalone piece after musicians refused to perform it, such is its difficulty.

The trailblazing Chiaroscuro Quartet plays this and two of Beethoven’s expressive quartets in this concert.
