Idrîsî Ensemble

Idrîsî ensemble adopts a maritime mindset to map the fluidity of cultures. We perform rare and never-recorded medieval repertoire from period manuscripts, together with UNESCO-protected and endangered traditions. Through cutting-edge research in medieval literature, music archaeology and postcolonial historiography, we aim to complicate modern notions of identity and alterity. Our role is to represent ourselves beyond myths of foundational purity, towards a cultural syncretism embodied in manuscripts and practices, through ancient, contemporary, oral or written music. We sing the Mediterranean, not as a border between distinct identities, but as a space of exchange, communion and evolution.
