Thomas Morley's First Booke of Consort Lessons was initially published in 1599, with a second edition in 1611. The music is for an English mixed consort, consisting of flute, treble viol, lute, bass viol, bandora, and cittern. The first three instruments feature prominently, in particular the lute, which plays many rapid divisions, while the bass viol, bandora, and cittern form a kind of proto-continuo section.
The concert will feature music for the full consort, as well as solos, duets and lute songs, by John Dowland, Peter Phillips, Richard Allison and Thomas Morley.
