The Basset Horn in Vienna

When basset horn virtuosi Anton David and Vincent Springer arrived in Vienna in 1785, mid-way through their decade-long tour of Europe with Franz Dworschack, they were very fortunate to meet with Mozart, the basset horn’s biggest fan, who revised his Maurerische Trauermusik (Masonic Funeral Music) K.477 to include parts for them.
Discover the sounds of the basset horn in Vienna at the height of its popularity there. Music by Mozart, Beethoven’s ‘beloved brother‘ Franz Anton Hoffmeister, and Bohemian in Vienna Georg Druschetzky. Plus Mozart’s Italian opera inspiration Giovanni Paisiello, and member of his all-star string quartet (along with Haydn and Vanhal) composer and violinist Carl Ditters von Dittersdorf.
