In 1771 the musician Domenico Corri moved from the Roman apartments of Prince Charles Edward Stuart to Edinburgh, heart of the Scottish Enlightenment. There he and his celebrated soprano wife Francesca performed for and with the Edinburgh Musical Society whose members included the Duke of Buccleuch and the famous economist Adam Smith.

This concert evokes the sound-world of Enlightenment Edinburgh. It includes Corri’s annotated editions of traditional Scots songs, Italian arias by Gluck, Handel and Corri’s friend Haydn alongside well-known vocal pieces by Mozart.

And there will be no fewer than three versions of Auld Lang Syne, spanning a hundred years of the song’s development, including the version heard by Robert Burns himself.
