The Lacock Scholars

A Great Mystery

Palestrina & Gibbons at Christmastime

A Great Mystery
Originally formed from a group of young participants on Lacock Courses, and still retaining a close association with these events, The Lacock Scholars are dedicated to small-ensemble, a cappella consort singing of Renaissance polyphonic music.

2025 sees two important anniversaries: the quincentenary of Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina (just four days after our concert) and that of Orlando Gibbons which fell on 5th June.

Advent is actually one of the church's great seasons of penitence, filled with yearning and anticipation, but also of contemplation, fasting, and reflection. Christmas arrives with a bolt of joy but also requires us to confront a deep and disruptive mystery – the incarnation is something to be revered and approached with awe and humility.
Following Lay Clerkships at Gloucester Cathedral and Christ Church Cathedral in Oxford, Greg Skidmore pursues a varied career as a consort, choral, and solo oratorio singer alongside his growing commitments as a conductor and workshop leader. He is one of the UK’s leading consort and choral singers, having appeared with The Tallis Scholars, The Sixteen, The Cardinall's Musick, I Fagiolini, Tenebrae, and The Gabrieli Consort among others.
