The Tallis Scholars

Byrd and Lassus

Byrd and Lassus
Byrd's simple, unshowy Mass for Five Voices – composed for secret, Catholic worship in a Protestant land – is interspersed by French and Flemish music from 16th-century masters of Renaissance polyphony.

Peter Phillips describes the theme behind much of this programme as 'the uncertainty of human existence, and the comfort music can bring to those living in doubt' which then closes with the irrepressible joy and hope of the 'Magnificat'. Sung by the pure voices of The Tallis Scholars, this intimate music will glow in the King's College chapel acoustic.

Programme:
Byrd Mass for Five Voices (Kyrie and Gloria)
Lassus Media vita
Gombert Media vita
Lassus Musica dei donum
Byrd Mass for Five Voices (Credo)
Byrd Mass for Five Voices (Sanctus and Agnus)
Lassus Timor et tremor
Josquin Praeter rerum seriem
Lassus Magnificat Praeter rerum seriem

The Tallis Scholars
Peter Phillips director
Daniel Hyde director
