From his upbringing in the Netherlands to his election as Holy Roman Emperor in 1519, Charles V consolidated a vast European and overseas empire, inheriting territories from his father and grandfather and ruling with a complex network of domains and administrations. His court became a leading musical centre, with highly prestigious composers and musicians who reflected the cultural richness of his environment and the political dimension of his power.
