Sophie Yates

Shun Melancholy

Shun Melancholy
A rare opportunity to hear a concert of music from the court of Queen Elizabeth I in a 15th-century medieval farmhouse near Castle Cary, Somerset, performed on virginals by Sophie Yates.

The Old House at Cockhill is a rare surviving example of a 15th-century medieval farmhouse with a two-bay hall, beams dating from 1435 and a painted room, likely once used as a chapel with unique wall paintings.

Sophie Yates began her career by winning the international Erwin Bodky competition at the Boston Early Music Festival. As a result, she was invited to tour and broadcast throughout the eastern states of America. She now performs regularly around Europe, the United States and Japan.

'Sophie Yates plays with exceptional poise – ornaments are impeccably measured and fast figurations are technically flawless, yet such polish doesn't mask expressiveness. She draws out every emotional nuance...' – BBC Music Magazine

Due to very limited space, advance booking is essential. To book, please email caryhistsoc@gmail.com. Precise address details will be confirmed after booking. A second performance on the same day may be added if there is sufficient demand.
