Music from the Courts of Burgundy

 Bold, Fearless and Rash
The fabulously wealthy dukes of Burgundy (1356-1477) presided over a court that was legendary in its own time as a culmination of the traditions of medieval society and art.

With a self-conscious romanticism, successive dukes preserved the highest ideals of courtly love and revelled in chivalric orders, bound up in arcane ceremonies and mystical number symbolism. This found its musical expression in the Burgundian chanson and Basse Dance, whose crystalline beauty represents one of the highest achievements of medieval art.
