Saraband

Rivals

Rivals
Saraband
Sarah Bealby-Wright and Henrietta Wayne violin
Johan Löfving theorbo/guitar
Jacob Garside cello/viola da gamba

The 17th & 18th centuries were times when one man could resolve a quarrel with another by challenging him to a duel and shooting him. When it came to culture wars, things weren’t so drastic, but the battleground was littered with pamphlets and publications written by men on opposing sides of the current debate on taste and aesthetics.

In this programme Saraband explore the musical rivalries of the 17th and 18th centuries and play some of their favourite music which, with the passing of centuries, we can love equally!

Nicola Matteis (c. 1650–1713): ‘Ground in D’ from Ayres for the Violin
Matthew Locke (c. 1621/3–1677): ‘Fantasia’ from Suite No. 1 in G minor, (‘The Broken Consort’)
Marin Marias (1656–1728): ‘Rondeau Paysan - La Biscayenne’ from Suite No. 6 in E minor (Pièces de viole, Livre IV)
George Frideric Handel (1685–1759): Andante and Allegro from Trio Sonata in A major, Op. 5 No. 1/HWV 396
Giovanni Bononcini (1670–1747): Largo and Allegro from Trio Sonata No. 9 in B minor
Giovanni Kapsberger (1580–1651): Canario
Henry Purcell (c. 1659–1695): and Anon. Excerpts from The Beggar’s Opera
