Wandering Pipers

Ian Harrison brings to the shawm, cornetto and historical bagpipes the passion of the folk music of his native Northumbria combined with an intense study and knowledge of historical sources and playing techniques. His improvisational and virtuosic style have charmed audiences throughout Europe, North America, Asia and Australia and he has been hailed as 'the Miles Davis of Early Music'. From 1993 to 2021 he was co-director of Ensemble Les haulz et les bas, and now directs Ensemble Inventio. He teaches shawms and medieval music at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis and historical improvisation at the Musikhochschule Frankfurt.

Poul Høxbro is a true musical pioneer, a flautist and percussionist with a repertoire stretching from the Early Middle Ages to the present day. He has played a multitude of concerts on 5 of the 7 continents, presenting his solo programmes or as a soloist and co-creator in Early Music, traditional and contemporary musical contexts and even in theatrical plays, opera, musical and film. He masters the medieval pipe-and-tabor, the Chinese xun, low whistle and the traditional Scandinavian willow flute and vallhorn and is always trying to extend the limits of these instruments and to renew their repertoire.

In this dynamic performance they pool their resources in a virtuoso exposition of sound, boldly going where no medieval musicians have gone before and bringing to the audience a radiant bouquet of music from the towns and pastures of medieval Europe!
