JS Bach: Goldberg Variations

JS Bach: Goldberg Variations
The Goldberg Variations by JS Bach, one of the most extraordinary and demanding masterpieces of the Early Music repertoire, can now be heard in a unique new version, performed for the first time on two lutes. Composed in 1741 for harpsichord, this perfect architecture of sound is reimagined through the contrasting light and shadow of baroque lutes. Their rich timbral palette, expressive dynamics, and subtle phrasing transform the work into an intimate, vivid, and moving musical experience.

Praised in the press as a ‘lyric poet of the lute’ with ‘breath-taking virtuosity’ and an ‘astonishing range of tone colours and dynamics', Peter Croton is renowned for his expressive interpretations and refined musicianship.

As a soloist, Thomas Langlois was awarded first prize at the German Lute Society’s International Lute Competition dedicated to the music of John Dowland in Weimar in 2026 and was awarded second prize at the International Lute Competition of the German Lute Society in Weimar in 2025.

Thomas and Peter will record the complete Goldberg Variations in December 2026, to be produced and released by Carpe Diem Records.

JS Bach Goldberg Variations BWV 988 (version for two lutes)

Peter Croton, Thomas Langlois lutes
