Musica Antica Rotherhithe

Les sauvages, or, The Savages

The final tableaux of Rameau's Les Indes Galantes

Les sauvages, or, The Savages
Musica Antica perform Jean-Philippe Rameau's Les Sauvages (1736) alongside arias from his other works of the stage and chamber music by his contemporaries.

Inspired by a performance given by two Native Americans in Paris in 1725, Les Sauvages became one of Rameau’s most popular works, with his dance of the savages being described as a piece ‘which everybody knows’. Set in an idyllic, pre-colonial North America, and pitting devious French and Spanish explorers against a Native American vying for the hand of an American Princess, it poses the question: who is the savage?

As ever, a bar selling wine, soft drinks and Holy Trinity's famous home-infused gins will be open from 7pm.

This concert will finish at 9:10pm.

  • date Sat, 20 June 2026
  • location Holy Trinity Church, Rotherhithe
  • time 6:30pm
  • ticket £2 - £10
