Music for a King

Music for a King
The 18th century was a golden age for the bass viol, perhaps especially in France. It fell out of favour thereafter, and was only revived in the 20th century.

This concert of French music features two bass viols, as well as flute, harpsichord and guitar.

Doomed Queen of France, Marie Antoinette, famously said “Let them eat cake”. So, appropriately, the concert will include cake – though the audience can be assured they will be safe from the guillotine!

Music by Morel, Blavet, Boismortier, Marais and Leclair.

Jenny Thomas flute
Richard Boothby bass viol
Ian Gammie bass viol & guitar
John Halsey harpsichord
