Leeds Baroque
Italian Discoveries II
The second in our series of lesser known Baroque works from Italy
Director Peter Holman, Soloists: Francis Gush (countertenor), Stuart O’Hara (bass) Asuka Sumi (violin)
Following their first modern paerformace of Bigaglia's Dixit Dominus in their season last year, Leeds baroque explore further some less familiar Baroque repertoire in a performance of Alessandro Scarlatti’s St John Passion. Composed in about 1770, this setting of the Passion is unusual in that the role of the Evangelist is taken by the countertenor rather than the, perhaps more familiar, tenor voice. The programme includes two more familiar works, Dixit Dominus composed in 1707 by Handel during his time in Italy and Arcangelo Corelli’s Concerto Grosso in D major, Op.6, no. 4.
