Striggio 40-part Mass

Hervé Niquet (Conductor)

Striggio 40-part Mass

Before there was Tallis’s mighty Spem in alium there was Striggio’s 40-part Mass: a sumptuous Renaissance epic in surround sound. Lost for centuries, it returns to the Proms in the expert hands of period specialists Le Concert Spirituel under Hervé Niquet. Their musical ritual – a concert recreation of a festal Mass – also includes the ‘heavenly harmony’ of the equally striking (and supersized) Ecce beatam lucem and music by Italian 16th- and 17th-century composers Benevolo and Coteccia, as well as motets by Palestrina, whose 500th anniversary falls this year.

The programme will also be interspersed with works by Benevolo, Corteccia and Palestrina.

There will be no interval

PROGRAMME

Alessandro Striggio:
Mass ‘Ecco sì beato giorno’ (29 mins)
Motet ‘Ecce beatam lucem’ (8 mins)
