GIBBONS
O clap your hands
PURCELL Welcome to all the pleasures
GIBBONS Hosanna to the Son of David
WEELKES Hosanna to the Son of David
PURCELL Te Deum and Jubilate

Henry Purcell’s sacred works are paired with ones by his predecessors, offering a rich portrait of church music in transition. Purcell crafted music for Anglican liturgy that, though less elaborate than his symphony anthems, is no less dazzling.

He mastered both traditional style and a modern voice shaped by Blow and Humfrey. His skill in the former shines in his settings of morning canticles, echoing anthems of Gibbons and Weelkes. A striking example of his modern flair is ‘Welcome to all the pleasures’, a St Cecilia’s Day ode featuring one of his most extraordinary overtures.

  • festival Royal Academy of Music: Resounding Shores
  • date Sun, 4 October 2026
  • location Duke's Hall, Royal Academy of Music, London
  • time 12:00pm
  • ticket £20
