Fretwork

Lachrimae

Lachrimae
The closing concert of the Dowland 400 Festival. John Dowland's greatest hit was his Lachrimae Pavan; in 1604, he poured his heart and soul into an extended cycle of viol consorts built around its themes.

One of the first great cycles in the history of instrumental music will be played by one of the country's finest ensembles, with Liz Kenny playing the lute part.

In 2021, Fretwork celebrated 35 years of performing music old and new and looks forward to a challenging and exciting future as the world’s leading consort of viols. In these last three and a half decades, they have explored the core repertory of great English consort music, from Taverner to Purcell, and made classic recordings against which others are judged.

Fretwork:
Emilia Benjamin
Emily Ashton
Joanna Levine
Sam Stadlen
Richard Boothby
with Liz Kenny lute
