Full Event Details
The Passion according to Dietrich Buxtehude. Composed in 1680, Membra Jesu Nostri is a cycle of seven cantatas or sung devotions meditating on the limbs of the crucified Christ. This work, scored for two violins, bass violin, continuo, viol consort and voices, occupies a unique place in German Baroque music, marrying intense religious fervour with highly personal expression and beauty. Based on a mystical medieval hymn, the text guides the imaginary observer through Christ’s sufferings gradually raising their gaze upwards, from his feet (Ad Pedes) to his face (Ad Faciem).
For this performance, Winchester Cathedral Chamber Choir are joined by musicians, including internationally renowned viol consort Fretwork, conducted by Joshua Stephens.
