The hours of darkness can be a time of anxiety or a chance for peaceful reflection – but for centuries, believers have sung through their hopes and fears in the music of Compline. That’s the inspiration behind this exquisite concert from The Gesualdo Six: a timeless journey into the music of the night from Tallis to Tormis, sung by candlelight in the nocturnal atmosphere of St Martin-in-the-Fields’ ancient crypt. From the prayers of Hildegard of Bingen to the romantic dreamworld of Schubert and Rheinberger, these are sounds to illuminate the soul.
