Hamburg Ebb and Flow - German Connections

Hamburg Ebb and Flow - German Connections
Ensemble 135 explores the musical connections between five composers: Telemann, Buxtehude, Handel, Mattheson and Bach. Through their works, it traces a web of influence and friendship that radiated from Hamburg across Germany and beyond.

In the 17th and 18th centuries, the port city of Hamburg stood at the crossroads of trade and culture in northern Europe. It was a place where musicians met, exchanged ideas, and set out again on new journeys – much like the tides that rise and fall in its famous harbour, as depicted by Telemann's 'Hamburger Ebb und Fluth' – Hamburg Ebb and Flow.

Programme:
Buxtehude Trio Sonata in C minor, BuxWV 262
Telemann Trio Sonata for Recorder and Violin in A minor from Essercizii musici, TWV 42:a4
Mattheson Suite VII in B flat major from Pièces de Clavecin
Telemann Canon Sonata I in G major, TWV 40:118
Handel Passacaille from Sonata in G major, HWV 399, Op. 5 No. 4
JS Bach Organ Trio Sonata in D major (originally in E flat major), BWV 525

Ensemble 135:
Naomi Okuda recorder
Eriko Nagayama violin
Oliver John Ruthven harpsichord
