Fretwork

Dowland

Ian Bostridge & Elizabeth Kenny

Dowland
Tenor Ian Bostridge, lutenist Elizabeth Kenny, and viol consort Fretwork delve into the timeless melancholy and beauty of John Dowland’s music, paired with a modern reflection by Adrian Williams.

This intimate programme features some of Dowland’s most iconic works, including Flow, my tears, In darkness let me dwell, and selections from Lachrimæ alongside Teares to Dreams (2004), Adrian Williams’s hauntingly lyrical homage to Dowland’s pavans. Blending Renaissance and contemporary voices, the concert explores themes of sorrow, introspection and musical continuity across centuries.

Williams' Teares to Dreams, written for the Cheltenham Festival, draws on the same instrumentation as Dowland while weaving in a distinctly modern sensibility. The result is a poignant dialogue between past and present, performed by some of today’s most revered interpreters of early and contemporary music.

Programme:
John Dowland
Flow my tears
Lachrimæ Antiquæ Novæ
The King of Denmarks Galiard
Can she excuse my wrongs/The Earle of Essex Galiard
Lachrimæ Gementes

Sorrow stay!
M John Langtons Pavan
My thoughts are winged with hope
In darkness let me dwell
Lachrimæ Tristes

Adrian Williams Teares to Dreams
John Dowland Lachrimæ Coactæ
If my complaints/Captaine Digory Piper, his Galiard
Lachrimæ Amantis

I saw my lady weep
Shall I strive with words
