Brahms and Schoenberg Sextets
Schoenberg's Verklärte Nacht, scored for rich-textured string sextet, is now his most popular work. Composed in 1899, it is both a deeply moving product of late, post-Wagner Romanticism and a prophetic signpost to the 20th century ahead. In contrast to Schoenberg's nocturnal melancholy, Brahms's youthful B flat Sextet is mainly a work of sunny optimism flowing freely with songful melody.
