Friendship and Flowers

Friendship and Flowers

continuo logoSupported by a grant from Continuo Foundation

Join The Brook Street Band and David de Winter for a beautiful evening concert, pairing Handel’s Deutsche Arien with Telemann’s Morality Cantatas.

We all need a little Friendship and Flowers in our lives, a digital detox to take us back to the beauty of nature, the joys of being outside and the simple pleasures in life. Handel’s Deutsche Arien perfectly fit the bill, each one an impeccably crafted miniature championing our world’s natural beauty. These will be paired with neglected gems by his great friend Telemann, selected from the Morality Cantatas. These contain practical life advice, apt considering the enduring bond between the two men. Nature and the sublime from Handel and everyday common sense from Telemann are brought together.

Originally scored for soprano, the Brook Street Band re-imagines and re-heats these glorious pieces in a way Handel and Telemann, entrepreneurs and forward-thinkers, would recognise. It repurposes them for tenor, separating vocal and melodic instrumental lines, giving clarity and definition, to help us hear the music in a fresh new way.

This concert will take place during Brook Street Band's 'Handel Celebration Weekend' residential course at Hawkwood College (19-21 Feb). The weekend will be spent exploring and playing instrumental repertoire (plus music by Handel's contemporaries) in a historically informed style, on baroque or modern instruments, with appropriate ornamentation, phrasing, and bowings, and exploring the crucial role of the bass line and continuo.
