Miki Takahashi (Of Feinstein Ensemble)
Bach Weekend: Bach Solo Violin

Bach was not the first composer to write unaccompanied violin music but his compositions certainly extended the emotional scope and scale of such works to a peak that has never been equalled. Over the last few years violinist Miki Takahashi has built a reputation as one of the most effortlessly virtuosic and gifted baroque players of her generation. Her programme finishes with Bach’s much-loved Partita in D minor, a work which includes his best-known use of dance: the extraordinary Chaconne. Takahashi also performs a prelude by one of Bach’s great predecessors, Thomas Baltzar. He was particularly famous for his unaccompanied violin playing, with the 17th century diarist John Evelyn commenting that ‘He plaid on that single Instrument a full Consort’.

Pieces:
Thomas Baltzar - Prelude in G major
JS Bach - Sonata for solo violin in G minor,
BWV 1001
Partita No.2 in D minor, BWV 1004
