Organ Anniversaries: 1627–1927

Steigleder, Rameau, Merkel and Widor on the two organs of St Gregory’s

Organ Anniversaries: 1627–1927
St Gregory’s organist Dr August Guan presents the Gloucestershire Organists’ Association’s annual recital, using both of the church’s contrasting pipe organs: the Sebastian Blank baroque organ in the chancel and the recently restored 'Father' Willis organ in the west gallery.

The programme traces a sequence of musical and biographical anniversaries across four centuries. On the Blank organ, August performs selected variations from Johann Ulrich Steigleder’s Tablature Book Daß Vatter unser of 1627, followed by Rameau’s Gavotte et six doubles of 1727.

The second half moves to the Willis organ. Widor’s Præludium from the Suite Latine marks the centenary of 1927, while Gustav Merkel’s Variations on a Theme by Beethoven, Op. 45, brings together two anniversaries of 1827: Merkel’s birth and Beethoven’s death.

The recital therefore places four dates — 1627, 1727, 1827 and 1927 — in dialogue across two very different instruments and four distinct keyboard traditions.
