This programme spans two centuries of English music, from William Byrd to Henry Purcell. It traces how English vocal writing changed, from the Tudor age through the melancholy lute songs of Dowland's era to the expressive, dramatic style Purcell brought to the London stage. Performed within the ancient walls of Bolton Priory, beside its striking ruins, the concert sets this music within a setting as rich in history as the repertoire itself.
