Black Bear Baroque

Black Bear Baroque is a London-based chamber ensemble specialising in eighteenth-century repertoire for violin, cello and continuo. Named after the historic concert venue at the Black Bear Inn, Cambridge, the ensemble draws inspiration from the vibrant musical culture of this venue and its surviving collection of concert programmes, to explore the rich repertoire of sonatas and chamber works. Their programmes include celebrated masterpieces from Handel, Geminiani and Corelli, alongside projects championing lesser known composers such as Pieter Hellendaal and Alexis Magito.

Formed in 2026 by graduates of the Guildhall School of Music & Drama and the Royal College of Music, the musicians have collaborated with some of the country’s leading period ensembles, drawing on experience across chamber music, opera and orchestral performance. Treating violin, cello and harpsichord as equal partners in dialogue, Black Bear Baroque seeks to engage modern audiences by revealing the rich musical conversation between the three instruments, celebrating the rhetorical expression and spontaneity that lie at the heart of eighteenth-century chamber music.
